On July 8th, a new bill was enacted into law
in Hawaii, “HB 2843 HD2 SD2 CD1 entitled A
Bill for An Act Related to Invasive
Species”. This new bill will require Hawaii
shippers to pay the state a new fee based on
the weight of their shipment. The fee is
designed to support funding for programs
focused on protecting the State of Hawaii
from invasive species. The legislation
requires transportation companies to collect
this fee from the party responsible for
paying the freight charges. The effective
date of this new law is August 1, 2008.
Under the new law, the
invasive species user fee will be assessed
on the net weight of the imported freight,
computed on the basis of 50 cents for every
1,000 pounds of freight brought into the
state “or part thereof.”
Beginning September 1, 2008,
our freight
bills will reflect these charges. If you
have any questions about this new fee,
please contact Customer Service or your
Account Manager.
